The
fluid, hypnotic sound of dance remix
solo artist Lollipop, a.k.a.Todd
Shields, burns up dance floors with his
drum n' bass, breakbeat, and house
remixes, including his new
remix
of 3kStatic's progressive house track
'Parallel Rush'.
Tart and tangy, one taste of Lollipop
has dance aficionados hooked. But if
there is one thing about which this
unique artist remains passionate, it's
the importance of constant
experimentation to keep his musical
creations fresh and funky.
"I'm all about providing a DJ-friendly
mix that smoothly blends with the rest
of their set. Groove is essential to
what I do."
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Lollipop is a
classically trained musician with over
fifteen years experience playing
traditional acoustic instruments
including the cello, saxophone, bass
guitar, and piano. This allows him to
bring a proficiency and true musicality
to his remixes. Stints in high school
and college band and orchestra further
strengthened his musical chops.
Lollipop experimented with multi-track
and analog recording with classic
instruments, but it wasn't until his
family moved to Europe that he was
exposed to the thriving electronic
dance scene.
"A strong musical background is
essential to crafting good dance
music," explains Lollipop. "Knowing the
right chord structures to blend with
instruments only comes with years of
experience."
When computers became fast and
sophisticated enough to enable viable
electronic forms of instrumentation,
Lollipop enjoyed using a sequencer,
virtual synthesizer, and manipulated
samples to create original
compositions.
"Remixing involves swapping the
traditional for the technological
instrumentation - the acoustic for the
electronic. It injects a whole new
heart and creativity into music-making,
and opens up a whole new range of
possibilities," he remarked.
Lollipop's remix styles primarily
include drum n' bass and breakbeat.
He has an infectious enthusiasm for
dance music, and enjoys putting his
stamp on tunes of various genres.
This former member of Jobey's Lollipop
was commissioned by Empower Records to
provide a remix of David Burrill's
Little Red Corvette. Lollipop has also
recorded club material that has ignited
electric responses. A stint working at
Club Marrz in North Carolina further
exposed him to the styles that resonate
with club goers. Consistently glowing
reviews from his peers on
acidplanet.com reflect the high regard
in which he is held.
This artist is committed to always
pushing the dance envelope.
"I try notto model myself after others.
I concentrate on being one unique
Lollipop."
Lollipop welcomes the opportunity to
bring his remix skills to
labelsinterested in pairing his
distinctive sound with their projects
and artists.
